SOLVED Freenas Vanished From Windows Clients Under Network - Network Share Still Works

Hello I have been using this system for about 8 months without any issues at all. At some point the server stopped showing up on windows devices under network. I occasionally manually send data to the Freenas using my main workstation which was configured with a network share that is still working. I have deleted and reconfigured the CIFS share settings without luck. Any help would be much appreciated.


System Specs:

MB: Supermicro X10SLL-F
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231V3 Haswell 3.4GHz
RAM: 32GB Crucial DDR3 ECC 4x8GB
RAID CARD 1: LSI 9211-8i flashed with P20IT Firmware
HDD: 10x TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM

Known problem but not with FreeNAS, it's a windows problem. Just map your network drives and live with it.

Thank you for the response, I kinda gathered that from my searches but nothing was conclusive enough.

Guess I don't know how without the system listed under network. This is how it was originally done, and still works fine but I would like to do this on another machine etc. I am a not a pro and could use some help.

Sir, if your FreeNAS is, say, 192.168.1.10, then when you go in there and add a network location, precede it with two backslashes, like this: \\192.168.1.10. It will come right up in your windows network stuff.

I suggest looking at the existing map from Windows File Explorer, to ensure you know how it is mapped (e.g., whether by name or IP). You should see something like "\\Machine Name Z:" depending on the Windows version. Then go to the new machine, open File Explorer & in the address bar at the op, enter the machine string starting with \\. When you see the server show up in the network section, right click on it & choose to create a network map. You can also do this any number of other ways, but I like to verify Windoes can see the destination before mapping it. Good luck! I hope MS fixes this - they seem to have admitted it is their error & I confirmed it shows up in Win7 & Win 10, after some late Fall updates.
