Hi all,

I have just installed a new install on a old PC. Its an intel dual core 2.8ghz with 4 gb of ram in 2gb sticks.
Boot is via a 32gb ssd drive and 2 x 2TB western Digital reds in mirror.

Follwed all the set up guides on freenas site and the youtube guides as well. Can connect to the NAS by the web interface, all the drives are set as is the Users and i have a cifs windows sharing set as well. All looks ok as per the guides.

My problem is window will not recognise the nas. It either shows it as the freenas and then wont log on or just does not show it. I am logging on via the same laptop to acess the web interface.

I know i must be missing something really simple but i dont know what.

Can anyone help.

Massive thanks in advance

You're server hardware doesn't meet the minimum requirements by a long shot. It is doubtful anyone is going to spend much time helping you. Strange things happen with FreeNAS if the hardware isn't adequate. There is a reason why the requirements are what they are. While you may got this problem fixed and things running, you are asking for trouble in the long run.

By my reading , im only short on ram , and ive read that i should be ok with 4gb for a smple back up system.

I dont want to run media servers ect , just a mirrored data back up.

FreeNAS 9.2.1.9 is the last version to support UFS and 32 bit systems. The requirements at that time was a minimum of 4GB of ram. All versions since have been 8GB. What version are you planning on running?

The internet is full of wrong information. :)
So, im best off ditching Freenas, and finding a less ram hungry option.

Im stuck with a old LGA775 socket 2.8ghz 64 bit cpu.
4 gb of ram a 32 gb ssd and 2 x 2tb west red nas drives.

I only need a simple nas set uo for back up storage as mirror raid for max saftey.

Not to sound mean, but if "max safety" is the highest concern (which I would agree with); then running less than recommended hardware requirements would significantly void that train of thought. You may interpret it as a slight against you, but honestly most (if not all) contributors are trying to assist in making sure you undertake the endeavor with FreeNas the correct way.

Please take some time to look at the "Recommended Reading" articles in my signature and it will help you greatly.

Something based on Ubuntu Server might be a better fit for your needs, but ...
max saftey
If you want max safety for your data, you should seriously consider using modern server grade hardware, regardless of what you decide to run on it. Since your needs are modest, you might consider a Lenovo TS140 or a Dell PowerEdge T20. As of today, the latter can still be had for $179 directly from dell.com.

Your root permission must be configured as > windows<, then windows will see it and display it
in the network window.

All of my datasets are set to UNIX and they show up on the network just fine.
At one time, long ago, I could not see my server and I was under the impression that changing
the permissions for that dataset to >windows< was what caused it to be visable from the windows network after
clicking on >FREENAS< ???
Permissions have been a major headache for me, so basically my permission configuration is a "pants down and bent over"
kinda thing. No one in my family has taken advantage of my "position" so I guess it works ok for me.
I have a lot to learn about this kinda thing and will need to stop responding to these types of posts in the future, Sorry
