Hopefully you find a solution to this. I have the same issue with the new update on different hardware. Debating making another post on it. Same exact error to the T. Attached image.

Alright so I've done the following:
Downloaded FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201511020249 and installed on a USB drive, the same issue occured . I used the same image and installed it on a diffrent USB drive and diffrent USB port and ....it works

The only two updated I have are the one below:

Upgrade: freenas-pkg-tools-9.3.1-STABLE-42a76e8 -> freenas-pkg-tools-9.3.1-STABLE-7afa903
Upgrade: docs-9.3.1-STABLE-42a76e8 -> docs-9.3.1-STABLE-7afa90

Update: Well I spoke to early ... after reboot it failed again. I'm done...

What type of USB drive were/are you using? Did you have it plugged into a USB3.0 port vs a 2.0 port?

@Mihai Alex, the bootloader should provide you with options of different boot environments. Can you just choose the previous one and boot that way?

Edit: Your system is definitely on the light side to run FreeNAS--the CPU is pretty weak, and 8 GB of RAM is the minimum. I don't know if either of those is affecting this issue, but they sure can't be helping.
