I'm still waiting for a response by SM. I asked if there is a firmware 20.00.04 with a newer NVDATA for the AOC-2308L-L8E (the SATA drive performance problem is a showstopper, if it also exist with the add-on card).

As far as I understand, there should be no difference in the firmware, regardless of onboard or add-on card. Of course, the controller should be the right one (in Jailer's and my case the 2308). But I don't wanna add any extra chance of damaging sth. Will report back as soon, as I have a response from SM. Till then, I will hold back "my" version of the firmware...

I havent noticed any performance prob with the 20.00.02 version on that card in mine, I'm sure they'll release the 20.00.04 version soon so I wouldnt worry too much.

Probably because most don't notice it until wham you do notice it and it's too late.

And I never said it was a performance problem.... so why are people making that assumption?

Probably because the release notes list a fix for a performance problem with SATA drives and they're mixing that in with their responses.

I think it originated from one of the fixes listed in SuperMicros release notes for the x10sl7-f firmware.

Edit: Hmm, @Jailer looks like you beat me to it :p

Is it OK to downgrade from P20 driver (20.00.02) back to P16 driver on X10SL7 motherboard?

The motherboard controller has FIRMWARE, the operating system has a DRIVER.
Whatever you do, the firmware version should match the driver.

Given the performance issues with P20 firmware, i want to downgrade to P16. I also will downgrade to FreeNAS 9.3.0.

Just wanted to confirm whether it is safe to downgrade the firmware.

If you want to be really safe, during your flashing of the controller firmware, disconnect your pool
drives so NOTHING can possibly happen to your data...

your signature shows SAS drives... the changelog of the firmware shows the performance issue for SATA drives. That's why I'm so confused about that. Why is SM sending out different firmware bundles for the same controller?

(I have no clue why the NVDATA for the onboard controller and the add-on card should be different)

Different glue hardware is a possibility.

you are right, this could be a reason ;)
I'm just waiting for an answer from SM or the release of the "final" firmware.

SM seems to be confused on this themselves. They have been slow to react and respond to my support ticket.

one could think so... had 2 amazingly fast replies (just few hours), but the question why there are different versions is available seems to result in no answer.

OT:
I'm really impressed by the quality of the SM support. So please don't get me wrong. This post is just an info...
