I tried several times to update firmware from 9.2.1.8 to 9.10 without success. I then updated to 9.3.1, and it finished after the system rebooted a couple of times. I then updated to 9.10, and noticed system alert warnings after completion. So I'm at version 9.10 stable (201605240427) and my plex media server plugin is functioning properly.

Any advice how to solve the following system alert? I did find one post with exactly the same system alert, except for version 16 instead of 15:
WARNING: June 3, 2016, 12:10 a.m. - Firmware version 15 does not match driver version 20 for /dev/mps0. Please flash controller to P20 IT firmware.

I'm trying to follow the directions provided in the following link, but already lost.
http://doc.freenas.org/9.10/freenas_alert.html

I ran modinfo -V, and got "kmod version 15". I'm not sure how to identify the HBA, and lost in the avago downloads drop down menus.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for the link Big Dave. I did find that link last night, and have been trying to read and understand the information without success. If I understand correctly, I should not have upgraded prior to flashing the hba(s). But I already did so. Is it ok to just ignore the warning until I'm able to figure this stuff out? I read that running a lower version may not be as problematic as running a higher version, but that the versions should be the same. Unfortunately, I have zero experience in this area. I still haven't figured out how to tell what hardware I have... And I'm worried that my backup may not be adequate.

I found the paperwork for the the LSI HBA I purchased... (LSI SAS 9207-8i 6GB)
I downloaded the freebsd p20 firmware and freebsd driver from Avago...

I also purchased a Vantec HBA, but don't have a part/model number...

I'll keep plugging away... Thanks...

  • It's my opinion that a mismatch is a mismatch
  • I've read it's risky, but did not experience anything with my temporary mismatch of >30mins.
  • Is older vs. newer or vice-versa more dangerous than the other? I seriously doubt anyone could say with any authority.

You could risk things and leave the pool at a FW/Driver mismatch, but if I were you,
I would find a way to resolve this without exposing the pool for any longer than
needed to solve the problem. FYI, when I went through this, I disconnected my
disks while mucking around with the flashing process (admittedly having done
it before when cross flashing my M1015 after buying it off Ebay).
Your mileage may vary. Protect your data by either full backup OR set the disks
aside until the mismatch is resolved. Take your time. Muck around a bit with some
basic CLI commands, it's part of becoming a good steward of your data. ;)

Get your hands dirty, post the results of your successes and failures and ask a
question or two if you get stuck.

Thank you Sakuru.

I had already copied the 9207-8.bin and sas2flash copied to a fat32 thumb drive. But I had also copied mptsas2.rom over from the sasbios_rel folder. I will delete the .rom file and perform the steps you outlined. I'll report back shortly. Thanks again,

John

I don't see where to mark this issue as resolved.
I think you just edit the title and there is a dropdown. But I can't honestly remember. Something along those lines anyway.
