State of 10-M2?

I have a HP MicroServer Gen8, currently running FreeNas 9.3 Nightlies.

I did give FreeNas 10-M1 a whirl a month or so back, but couldn't seem to get DHCP going - although to be honest, I didn't really try hard, as I was more just curious to see what the new UI looked like.

I note that M2 is now out as of June - curious as to what the state of things are in now?

Is FreeNAS 10-M2 something that the curious can/should boot up to take a look around? Where can we see known show-stopper bugs or major caveats we should be aware of?

(I thought I remember seeing a 10-M2 milestone on https://bugs.freenas.org/projects/freenas/roadmap, but can't seem to see those now).

It'd be nice if maybe the core team could even share a blog post, with a list of upcoming features in 10, or even a screenshot or two of this new UI! Or talk about the new Bhyve virtualisation feature?

It's *waaaaaaay* too early to really list upcoming features. Like every release, things seems to blow past deadlines and features end up being cut out, etc. There's an M3 and M4, and those are before betas...

So yeah, software isn't usable in its current form, and there's no telling when it will be, although I won't be even trying to install it until is in beta. The Mx release is only meant as a milestone for developers to have certain aspects of the code done by. It's totally internal and unless you are working with the developer group you aren't going to find enough information to really understand what all it means and why.

There's already a screenshot or two, but they aren't even "the final product". The WebGUI is still being developed with massive stuff missing. Things that should have a dropdown will say "dropdownhere" and "option1, option2, option3" as the precise fields and the code that will execute based on those fields doesn't even exist yet.

It's so incredibly pre-alpha it would be like Microsoft talking about Windows 12 right now.

Thanks for asking!

The current due date for the M2 public demo build is August 15th. More information will be forthcoming around then. We'll actually have a semi-usable (not feature complete but "functioning as a basic NAS") demo at the end of M2 and some documentation which talks about all of the new features.

I've been checking in on the nightlies here and there and maybe because it's still too early but the UI looks the same to me as it did in 9.3, about 2 weeks ago it was blue with the menu bar on the left like it is in some of the mock-up pictures.

That's on purpose. First the new middleware with old UI, then the new UI on new middleware.

So we're a week away from August 15th. Is that still looking like good date for the public demo build of M2?

Oh well, it takes time to make good software! It's worth the wait.

Hi,

Just wondering how things are coming for the public beta? =).

Super excited about seeing FreeNAS 10 M.2. Can't wait to see what you guys have cooked up.

Cheers,

@jkh, can we get an update on the current state of affairs? I notice the roadplan is currently at M4.
