Hi.

I'm wondering if anyone knows anywhere there's used Supermicro chassis available in Canada?

I'd like to go the Supermicro 846 route instead of Norco 4224 route if possible, but the shipping on pretty much all the used stuff on ebay makes it ridiculous.

I can find 846's for ~$400 + ~$500 shipping.

Or shipping of only ~$80, but a purchase price of ~$1,300.

I realize new they're around ~$1,800, at least here, so $900 including shipping is still cheaper, but at that point I think I'd rather go with a new Norco (~$550). I already have some super high speed 80mm fans, and a power supply I can use. I also have enough HBA's I wouldn't really miss the backplane of an 846.

Anybody have any other sources where the shipping isn't $500?

Thanks.

Hope you find one. These guys are in Calgary, and affiliated with era.ca. They are legit in terms of gear and shipping... but Supermicro gear is rare, and if they get it... I'll beat ya to it ;) The era.ca guys have branches throughout Canada.

Yea, as I said in my original post, it would be $400 cdn for that case, which is a good deal. But it's $500 to ship it. I don't feel it's worth it to pay $900 for something that's still technically used, even though as I mentioned above, they're about $1,400 to $1,800 new here. At that point I'd rather just spend the $550 cdn (and $40 domestic shipping) to get a Norco. I already have the PS, and HBA's required for the Norco vs the Supermicro. I even have some crazy high speed 80mm fans if needed.

Yea, I've got other stuff from ERA before. (I'm in Calgary actually) Picked up a 24 port gigabit POE layer 3 switch from them for a good price. I've rarely seen anything supermicro from them, at least in the way of cases. I did get a supermicro rebrand of an LSI 9260 from them too. With a BBU in good condition. It's still in my home esxi box.

Gave in and ordered a Norco RPC-4224. It came in and to my dismay it comes standard with the 120mm fan bulkhead. How disappointing. I know how hard it is to make static pressure with 120mm fans. And the 3 fans it come with don't even seem to move much air. I guess they're 1200 rpm or so. The part number on them only comes up with one hit, and it's not in english. They're part "GNF1202512MS"

I even have 4 fairly high speed 80mm fans that I was going to use if the ones it came with didn't cut it. I think the 80mm ones I have are 5,700rpm or something.

I wonder if I should try to find 120mm fans that will generate enough pressure, or find a place to buy the original 80mm fan plate? Very disappointed it comes with the downgraded fan plate. I've read cyberjocks thread on his 4224 and that he ultimately settled on 80mm fans. The 120 plate also makes the cables harder to manage as there's a fan immediately behind the sff connectors.

If you are in Calgary, did you try asking memoryexpress how much a new Supermicro would be? It seems to me that since memoryexpress carries Supermicro motherboards, a special order from them would have a regular retail markup.

As mentioned before, it's not airflow you want in rackmount cases, but static pressure. And 120mm fans have to work very hard to give it. The only one in your list that would be ok would be the Delta with 27mm pressure.

Yea, I actually got the supermicro MB, and the CPU from Memory Express. I'm sure they'd have been able to get a Supermicro case as well, but they retail for at least $1,400. I was only really interested in a used Supermicro as they're 1/3 the price. But since the only used ones are in the US, I didn't want to pay $400+ for shipping. My Norco shipped across the country, but it was only $40 to ship it because it came from within Canada. Ohh that border.
