I'm sorry OP, Panz is right. I thought you meant you were not seeing the serial number in the smartctl.
If it doesn't show up in the FreeNAS GUI itself, but it *DOES* show up in the smartctl, then this is a bug, not a problem with the drive, and should be reported back to the developers. Please let us know what you figure out.
I find that one or more Serial Numbers are
sometimes missing in the GUI (although visible with smartctl) but will often reappear in the GUI after a reboot.
A while back, after I reported this as a bug (on 9.2.1.5 at the time, I think), I granted one of the developers remote access to my machine, he edited the code, and all appeared to be fixed -- a fix that I understood to have been incorporated in the subsequent version of FreeNAS. But the problem still occurs from time to time on my machine.
Maybe the OP simply needs to reboot to see the Serial Number in the GUI, or, if the drive appears to have a real problem and needs to be RMA'd, I assume that the Serial Number will be visible on the label when he takes the drive out.
BTW, I have just noticed that 27% of those leaving feedback at NewEgg for the 4TB WD Reds gave only 1 "egg" -- and at least one reviewer said he wished he could have given it zero. Many, many DOA drives and drives that lasted only a very short time; some quit before formatting was complete. I didn't look at the actual percentages for the other WD Reds, but I don't think any (of any capacity) averaged better than 3 "eggs."
