On my server build I have the budget to add a nice SSD for a ZIL, but I don't think that I really need one.
Server Specs:
Xeon Processor
48GB ECC RAM
10x 7200 RPM SAS drives
4x Intel gigabit NICs
Server Role:
Samba - 50-75 users with an aggregated usage of maybe 100MB/s read and (5MB/s write). Primarily Windows 7 clients.
NFS - connection to server that performs tape backups.
Network: gigabit
I personally don't see much benefit to a ZIL in this situation, but would appreciate input (because it's better to get things right the first time).
