So i am still in the testing phase of using iSCSI to give my server the pool, i did tests using crystaldiskmark to test the read/write speed of various file sizes both before and after adding a ZIL, but i didn't notice any increase. Instead i noticed a decrease in read/write speed when using a ZIL. Since the ZIL is used for sync writes is it correct to assume it will give me no benefit if using iSCSI?

depends on your iscsi initiator. vsphere for example only sets async transfer. until your pool is not set to syncwrites..slog will be bored. since you did not provide the mandatory hardware part in your post or more information about your setup...

slog needs low latency ssd, consumer products perform very bad and this might make things slow. zpool iostat and gstat commands should help you.
