Hi,

I’m planning my new FreeNAS build and it would be nice if you could give me some feedback on my planed setup. The System should replace an existing 6 HDD system (HGST Deskstar 7K400 drives). The system should be expandable and therefore could be a bit to large for the 6 disks of the initial setup. After considering the recommandation threads I was thinking about the following components:

Mainboard: X10SL7-F
Compatible to Haswell (Energy saving and powerfull), enough SATA ports onboard

CPU: E3-1220 v3 / E3-1230 v3
Not quite sure which one I should use, pools should be encrypted, but that should be no problem with both?

Power Supply: Seasonic G-450

Case: Coolermaster Stacker
I want to reuse an old Coolermaster stacker Case with 12 5,25” bays. I found Cremax Icy Dock MB074SP-1B Black Vortex (http://geizhals.de/cremax-icy-dock-mb074sp-1b-black-vortex-a1141531.html?hloc=at&hloc=de) hot swap bays which are quite affordable. Are there some (more professional) alternatives to this bays?

RAM:
For the RAM I’m not quite sure which one to pick. Using the supermicro compatibility list I found 8GB modules from Samsung (M391B1G73QH0-YK0 - http://geizhals.de/samsung-dimm-8gb-m391b1g73qh0-yk0-a1079291.html). I have also read about the CT4484984 modules from crucial in the thread in this forum which are a bit more expensive. Should I prefer one of them? I’m not quite sure if I will go 2 or 4 dims at the beginning.

That should be main parts of the new system. Is this a round setup or in some points overkill? Is there something missing?

Thanks to everyone!

Motherboard and processor look fine. You didn't state how many hard drives you plan on running so whether or not your chosen power supply will be adequate is unknown. The CM stacker will work but exhaust airflow is a bit lacking with just one 120mm fan in the rear and a rather weak 80mm in the top. The drive cages you selected are not hot swap cages if that is what you are looking for. I also don't know how you will secure them with Coolermasters clip retention system. The CM hard drive cages hold 4 drives each so I'd stick with those to keep things simple.

https://geizhals.de/cremax-icy-dock-mb154sp-b-a857026.html <- These seem rather well-made.

The E3-1225 v3 is a 1220 with integrated Graphics, which you wouldn't need as the mobo has a dedicated graphics chipset onboard. In my opinion it's either E3-1220 v3 or E3-1241 v3 - either you need performance or you just want the Xeon label :)

RAM wise I'd always go for the Samsungs from the tested memory list. Crucials are 2nd choice for me when the Samsungs aren't available - I'm running 3 Supermicro X10 boards with 2 of the 2x8GB Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B Kits in each.

The PSU is plenty enough for this system. Even with 12 HDDs and some very gray theory you've got a peak load of 2/3rd of the PSU's max load.

Those plasticky clips for the 5.25" bays can be removed and just the standard screws be used. I've had this case about... 7 years ago and gave it to a friend 4 years ago. He ran some pretty extreme systems in there, 0.5-1kw energy usage at the wall. No trouble with that.

Hi,

thank you for your fast feedback!
@Jailer: I want a 8+ ready system. That is the reason I'm not going for a Define R5 or similar. I would love to invest in an 19" Case with 12 Bays or something, but these things are quite expensive and therefore the old stacker is a kind of a trade of for the beginning. The Manifacturar of the Cages state them as hot plug on their website: http://www.icydockuk.com/goods.php?id=172 . Did I get something wrong here? The system looks quite nice for me (with the 120mm fan in the front).

@marbus90: You are right about the 1225, I just got the numbers wrong. I meant the E3-1220, I have changed the first post.

The stacker ist just in consideration as it is laying arround and it is a nice system in general. I think it should be possible to generate enough airflow with 120mm fans in the front + 3x 80mm fan in the back (you can mount 2x 80mm in the place for the second power supply!

Aaaah... rackmount.

Alternatively a "proper" Supermicro chassis with redundant 500W PSUs and a backplane with 12x SATA connectors:
https://geizhals.de/supermicro-826tq-r500lpb-schwarz-a722263.html

The Supermicro should be rather quiet as well as it uses new 500W Platinum level PSUs. Older, less efficient PSUs were far noisier.

Yeah is you've already got it use it. I've got one too and the airflow is nothing spectacular but 2 additional 80mm would probably help some. I prefer the noise profile of larger fans but being rather hard of hearing I'm sensitive to things like that.

Sounds like you've got it covered .

@marbus90: Yeah I've seen the Inter-Tech cases and these are my best candidates. Still a lot of money for a case and atm I have no rack to mount it in (this is just plan for the future). So I think I will use the stacker in a first step

@Jaller: Yeah you are right, for my current server I use a Define R5 with quite silent fans. But the system can not properly handle the heat for the drives anymore. The system will be in a part of the flat were noise shouldend be a problem, therefore the system does not need to be very silent!

Thank you both very much! If anymone else has some advises or see any problems I would be happy to hear them :)

Lackrack style for the win. ;) Also those Rackmount things are smaller than tower chassis for the disk count. A bit deeper maybe, but I think you can unscrew the handles from the Intertechs and put it on it's side.

Yeah I know that Lack-Hack... not my thing :D. I have another questionr regarding the RAM. I've read a lot stuff about X10 boards and the certified memory but I'm not sure if i understood everything properly. I can get the following modules:
http://geizhals.de/samsung-dimm-8gb-m391b1g73qh0-yk0-a1079291.html

Are these the proper modules? Are there "special" supermicro branded ones which use the same chips? I'm a little bit confused about that...
