first off i better say i know my setup dont reach requirements this is just for fun and a way to make use of old computer bits i WONT be putting any valuable data on it

with that said
dell dimention 5000 intel pentium 4 HT (enabled)
2GB ram (go on laugh it out)
32bit freenas (which one im not sure now i just found a little list)
1) 250GB 2.5" sata drive
1) 40GB pata drive
1) 80GB pata drive (on the same cable/ jumpers set correctly) (to my knowledge)

so as the title says this drive is being detected by the bios windows 7 and nas4free (which i couldent work out how to share stuff on)
up until 24h ago it had an O/S on it so i dont think the drive is faulty (no change in how its connected to computer)
its the 60GB one that wont get detected its in the master position on the ribbon thing and the pins are set to master (or thingy select either way it dont have an effect)
the 40GB is detected thats at the end of the ribbon (which is the correct way round) again setting of jumpers have no effect

if i swap positions they never get detected in bios whatever i do with jumpers (i havnt tried everything just the obvious thinking about it now) if i swap them around

sata is set to master too

sounds more like a drive issue to me rarther than lack of ram or something like that wondering if theres any suggestions you have

im fairly sure ive missed some off here that i wanted to say but its gone 4AM and im going to sleep
cheers for the help

That "60GB drive" is an 80GB. You mention that it had an OS on it - what's the status of it now?

Is it in a factory fresh state or ???

it is an 80GB why i said 60GB i dont know

anyway what you said gave me an idea i booted my windows 7 disk and delited all the partitions etc on all my drives
that has fixed it
thank you

however i now have an issue with a different drive this one seemed to be killed by nas4free when i formatted the drive
its in bios and freenas but freenas brings up an error when i try to mount it (an error occurred)

oh and it shows up
sata primary hard disk drive 0 failure
on the phoenic rom bios page just before freenas starts throwing stuff on the screen

Well sir, that is likely to be a serious issue with the controller board or something.

Those drives are from like the Clinton administration. They deserve an honorable retirement, so that their silicon and metals can be recycled into the Earth's crust sir. Now is the time. Do not be sentimental about sub-100GB PATA drives from the Clinton administration. Give them the honorable return to mother Earth's crust that they deserve.

this one is a SATA drive (cant fit any more PATA drives) and is practically new (but a few years old) definitely sub 100 hours of use
i suppose controller board issues mean its dead.............bugger
