What is the best OS for an offsite backup?

I have a Q6600 pc that I am going to try to use for an offsite backup. What OS? It has vista on it ATM. Should I use vista, freenas, buy windows 7?

Personally, I wouldn't use Windows for an offsite backup. It can be difficult to set this up encrypted. I think I'd look into something *NIX based.

I'm assuming that with a Q6600 you have desktop hardware and it will be unsuited for FreeNAS.

a ubuntu server might do what you want, not sure 100%

I agree, for stability and ease of SSH setup, Ubuntu seems like a good option.
