SOLVED: replacing flash drive (and upgrading freenas OS) solved the problem, albeit by brute force.

Hi all,

Lately, I have seen this error on my freenas console

vm_pager_get_pages I/O read error

I don't see "functional" side effects, i.e. everything appears to work ok.

Context
  • Freenas 8.0.3
  • Running from a 4g usb flash drive

I originally concluded that my hard drive (yes it's a single hard drive system) was going bad. However, I have installed new empty hard drives and still see the error.

This leads me to conclude that the flash drive is bad.

Red herring? Upgrade failed

Additionally I tried upgrading to Freenas 8.2 using the "GUI" method , but it failed silently. i.e the system rebooted, but it was still on 8.0.3. I didn't see any obvious problem in the logs, but am new to the BSD world and freenas.

A few questions:
  • has anyone seen this error
  • Does the evidence point to a bad flash drive? or elsewhere?
  • how can I run a 'fsck' or similar tool on the flash drive to check for bad sectors?
  • any other suggestions?

thanks
