Very slow file transfers

Hello

I've recently setup a FreeNas box with the following specs:
Intel Pentium G2020 2.90GHz
Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz
Gigabyte GA-B75N Socket 1155
Currently has 2Tb hard disk connected via SATA3

My issue is that I'm getting extreamly slow file transfer speeds across my LAN, with FTP its steady at approx. 7 Mbit/s and CIFS is even slower as could be expected.

What sort of tests can I do to determine where the issue lies and what possible solution might there be.

Appreciate any help people can offer.

Edit: I am not using encryption on the disk

How are you networking it? Wireless, 10/100, gigabit Ethernet?

If the latter, it might be a bad cable.

Hello

After some furthur testing using iperf, I can now confirm the following:

After checking iperf from a number of PCs in my home I realised I was topping out at 11.2 MBytes/s. I checked my router and found out that its not gibabit capable, so those speeds are to be expected.

However from my main PC transfer rates are: 4.62 Mbytes/sec - this PC is connected through a Powerline adaptor which should be rated at 200Mbps, giving 20-25Mbytes/s theoretical max, so why so slow? Is it really down to the powerline adaptor?

Since the other pc's are able to get up to 11.2 MBytes/s, it's not a FreeNAS issue. If you have gigabit NIC's in your FreeNAS box and other pc's, you could add an inexpensive gigabit switch and boost the performance for them.

I've never used a powerline adapter, but would say that it's probably the bottleneck. Unfortunately, I can't recommend a alternative.

This is unfortunate but pretty much what I expected, guess I'll have to get to work rewireing the house, fun.
