Hello,

After reading many posts, including those by cyberjock, I've decided it's time to be safe rather than sorry. I am currently running FreeNAS 9.2 with 6 3TB drives in ZFS Z2 on the following:

MSI FM2-A75MAE35
AMD A5-5300 APU 3.4GHZ
8 GB Corsair 1066 DDR3

I've come up up with the following options reading some of the other posts.

Intel XEON e3-1230v2 1 $229.00 $229.00
Super Micro MBD-X9SCM-F-O 1 $179.00 $179.00
Crucial CT2K4G3ERVLD81339 2 $114.00 $228.00
$636.00

Intel XEON Core I3-3240 1 $119.00 $119.00
Super Micro MBD-X9SCM-F-O 1 $179.00 $179.00
Crucial CT2K4G3ERVLD81339 2 $114.00 $228.00
$526.00

SuperMicro MBD-X10SLH-F-O 1 $209.00 $209.00
Intel Core i3-4130T 1 $139.99 $139.99
Samsung M391B1G73BH0-CK0 2 $92.99 $185.98
$534.97

SuperMicro MBD-X10SLH-F-O 1 $209.00 $209.00
Intel E31220V3 1 $204.00 $204.00
Samsung M391B1G73BH0-CK0 2 $92.99 $185.98
$598.98

This is for a home NAS which around 7 computers access. It hosts MySQL for XBMC preferences and all media files. I have 2 XBMC machines and plan to add 1 or 2 more in the future. It also acts as a local back-up for my wife's and my main desktop computers.

If someone could help me choose which one of the above would be a good option or if none, please explain and recommend other options. I noticed no one recommending AMD, so I didn't bother researching. I may add another NAS in the future and wasn't sure if I should eventually put this board in another chassis and add a SATA card or build another box altogether. If it's the former, then I'll probably need more power.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Peter

The two Crucial RAM kits you list are Registered. Are you sure that's what that motherboard uses? And when the motherboard has only four RAM slots, do you want to take up two of them for only 8GB?

How did you decide on that Samsung RAM for the X10 board? I'm not saying that it's a bad choice, but it's not one that I've seen recommended.

Thanks for responding. I ended up going with the following.

Supermicro MBD-X10SL7-F-O uATX
Intel E3-1245V3
Samsung M391B1G73BH0-CK0 - 32 GB

There was a combo at Newegg with that particular processor and the Samsung ram was recommended on Supermicro website. I normally buy Kingston, Micron, Crucial or Corsair for my desktops, but I went with manufacturer recommendation.

I also bought 7 x 4TB Seagate NAS drives with the intention of using 1 as as spare. This will go along with 6 x 3TB drives I have in my current NAS and purchased a spare for as well.

Hopefully I'm on the tight track.
