Currently I have 20 1TB HDDs configured in 10 RAIDZ1 vdevs into one volume (I think I said that right :)). That worked great for my production file server but now I want to use it for a backup server with larger HDD's. I would like to use 12 8TB HDDs in 2 RAIDZ2 vdevs into one volume and keep all the datasets, permissions, shares, etc. to all stay the same. Obviously I would move the data else where first but then can do I just delete the old pool, power off, rip out the drives, pop in the new drives and recreate a new pool or is there an easier way?

Does not compute.

RaidZ1 requires 3 disks minimum per vdev.

Can you post a “zpool status”

If you had the capacity to mount the pool and the new pool, then the easiest thing to do would be to zfs replicate the pool to the new pool.

Alternatively, how much data do you have? You should have no more than 8TB or so. Shouldn't be hard to store that on an intermediary pool...

How many drives are you capable of mounting simultaneously?

The chassis is full with HDD's so I couldn't get everything into the same box. If I understand you correctly I could spin up another Freenas box that has 8TB capacity, replicate the pool, delete the old pool, install the new HDD's, create a new pool, and then replicate the data back?

Yes.

You could even use some of your 8s.

As you could start your final pool with only one vdev and still have plenty of space
