Upgrade from 11.1-U5 to latest fails on insufficient space

Hi all. I probably know the answer, but when I try to upgrade from 11.1U5 to the latest revision of FN I get a middlewareerror about insufficient space. My boot drive is a 2GB USB stick, and think that maybe this is too small. It has 49% space free though.

If the upgrade is indeed failing due to the size of the stick, what's the best course of action to use to migrate the boot environment across to a bigger flash drive?

As per the documentation:

The absolute bare minimum size is 8 GB. That does not provide much room. The recommended minimum is 16 GB. This provides room for the operating system and several boot environments created by updates. More space provides room for more boot environments and 32 GB or more is preferred.

That explains it then. I've had several FreeNAS boxes running for years on 2GB sticks, but I didn't bother to upgrade them. So haven't hit the limit before. Is there a doc you could please point me at to walk me through preparing another stick and importing my configuration across? I don't want to muck this up if I can avoid it.
