Is there a scenario/setup where you can update a FreeNAS server without having to disconnect all the clients for a reboot?

I have production servers in use 24x7 and finding a time to disconnect all the iSCSI and NFS mounts for a reboot is next to impossible.

Am I going about this all wrong? Maybe a better method for updating?

Thanks,
Chuck

I imagine, with a TrueNAS system, with High Availability you could do it.

That seems to be a hardware only solution. I have hundreds of terabytes of storage already, is there something I can do to use my current freenas setups? There's doesn't seem to be a way to purchase the HA magic they have in the TrueNAS product.

No, even if there was, you'd never get zero downtime during the shift.

There are ways to do this, but they involve mega-buck, active/active SAN arrays.
