I just accidentally deleted an entire directory of files on my FreeNAS. I thought I had an individual sub-folder selected but apparently the whole folder above was selected and now a huge amount of data is gone.

What is the easiest way to get my files and folders back? They aren't in the recycle bin and I don't have any snapshots. Is there anything built in to FreeNAS or do I need third-party file recovery software?

I've used file recovery software in windows a while back but I have never used any Linux based software. Is there free file recovery software that is easy to use? Can I do it from a remote machine running Win7 or do I need to run it on the FreeNAS server?

P.S. I've stopped using the drive until this is resolved so that I don't overwrite anything.

ZFS?

Have you configured snapshots before deleting? If the answer is no, then you can't really recover.

I don't think I used ZFS because it needed more ram than I had available but I'm trying to confirm and can't find anywhere in FreeNAS where it shows the file system. I looked under the STORAGE tab and under the VIEW DISKS tab but it doesn't show it. Is there somewhere I can confirm this?

Also, I tried TestDisk but it can't see the drives from a remote machine. Perhaps there is a bootable cd that I can use. Anyone have any ideas?
