Unable to change permission recursively when theres x amount of data

Hey im having issues changing permission recursively ive primarly noticed this happens at a minimum of 500gb of data is stored..

i had the issue in 8.0.4 ive now upgraded to 8.2..
i see it working on it in 8.2 and after some time it closes down the window as if the changes have been made but when i then open permissions to check its back to the old

im running the system on a old usb drive but rest is following

1x Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 64MB 2TB

2x Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 64MB 3TB

4gb corsair ddr3

ASRock E350M1/USB3 (motherboard)

i am connected by cable throug a hub

any hints?
