hi all
I made a freenas box out of an early 2008 mac.
FreeNAS-9.2.1.4-BETA-9ba4ffb-x64
in earlier test runs I got the time resets and thought when I replace its battery it will be fine. it doesn't seem like it's fine, or are these 3 second jumps normal?

edit: also note the correction is always POSITIVE, seems like the time is lagging behind.

tnx for your time

Can you post system specs for that hardware? My instinct is that you really shouldn't be using that hardware with FreeNAS, but I'll wait for your reply to actually make that call.

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-eight-core-2.8-2008-specs.html
or
http://support.apple.com/kb/sp11

mine has 14 GB of ram
3 way mirror WD red 4GB
booting from delock sata to CF adapter (lost days NOT to get it booting from usb)
performs well for what it is.
these days apple put some server grade hardware in those machines. today that's another story.
has ecc memory and a dual xeon, just was standing around, the only downside I thought is power consumption.
a quick calc assuming today's energy costs will be stable assured me it's a cheaper option for the next 5 years than buying new hardware...

EDIT: maybe worth mentioning: these time resets happened while doing a 1.1 TB rsync from the old qnap TS 409 which has not finished yet..
EDIT2: here someone has the same problem after upgrading to freebsd 9.2, maybe related?
https://forums.freebsd.org/viewtopic.php?&t=42918
also it could have something to do with the dual processor setup, but the guy had only a temporal success degrading his boards to single processor..

Wow.. that uses FB-DIMMs as you are going to say it's cheaper than new hardware!? I had lower powered stuff than that and my new hardware that I bought last year will pay for itself next year!

Aside from the power usage, normally I'd say it should work. But, being an Apple product, I really can't vouch for it because there's no clue what they may have customized. That link may or may not be related. I'm really not sure. Since Apple products are almost never used as servers here for various reasons I really don't have any experience I can lean on to give you good recommendations.

you're probably right. that fully buffered stuff it in fact a good heating option...
that's why I wrote "quick calc" :)
See it that way: after reading the "so you want some hardware suggestions thread" I made a excel sheet to quickly see getting a supermicro board, a xeon processor, some ecc ram, a PSU and finally a case would cost me about 900$.
We were a bit short on money so that mac pro that only was hosting windows7 to test some stuff we didn't want to throw at our real workstations was a good option to test out ZFS.
It is in fact a masterpiece in engineering (I am really no apple fan but I took it apart to find those 5th and 6th sata connector), quiet, but yeah, I can't really say what the power consumption is right now, but comparing to my current GPU workstation with dual 1500W PSUs, hosting 7 high end GPUs it really can't be that bad :)
but yeah maybe I do that math again when I got a clearer mind.
