Yep, that's normal, a current SSH session will continue to work but you can't open a new one.

Badblocks is for the data drives, not the system drive.

So, now that i've restarted can I get the badblocks results? Or do I need to start over.

Then it's maybe a bad contact. Try to un-plug and re-plug the DOM to be sure it's correctly seated ;)

I'd restart badblocks just to be sure.
