Supermicro SC722 PSU enough?

Hi!

Recently got myself a Supermicro Superchassis SC721 TQ-250B with a stock 250W FSP powersupply.

I’m planning on reusing my old trusty Intel S1200KP board that have served me well for 6-7 years. The board is equiped with Intel Xeon E3 1225 processor (1155) and 16GB ECC memory.

I will be using WD Red’s 8TB x 4

Question is, will the PSU be enough for this?

Will be upgrading board/cpu in the future. It’s sufficient for my needs right now. I don’t need any more power really. Ram cap at 16gb is what will eventually force me to upgrade. Otherwise, rock-solid piece of equipment.

For that processor, you will be quite close to the limit for that power supply.

I don’t get it. What was Supermicro thinking? That PSU seems small for any build really.

I see they have Xeon E3’s v5 listed in compatible motherboards-list for that chassi. Is newer generation Intel really that much more power effiecient?

I guess i either have to replace the PSU or buy a new MB+CPU then.

I think you should be able to use it as is, but the chassis is probably targeted to low power builds more than mid-range.

I scrapped the whole idea actually. Chassi is going back to amazon. I figured, going to need more than 4-bay anyway.

I decided to do a new build based on Xeon E5 platform (Supermicro X10SRM-F, Xeon 1620v3 and Node 804 chassi)

It’s going to be epic.
