Stupid Question - Where to start with Hardware?

So I was sent here from a friend who uses FreeNAS and suggested I start here.

I have 10+ 2.5 SATA drives of various sizes I have collected over the years; upgrading computers and game systems. Which seems to be a waste to have them laying around doing nothing...

So why not build them into something useful like a backup of my backups.

Where do I start to figure out what hardware I need to build a FreeNAS system?

Thank you in advance!

In the "Resources" section of this forum: https://www.ixsystems.com/community/resources/. I'd start by looking in the "Fundamentals" and "Hardware" sections for resources with "Beginner" and "Introduction" in their names. That will get you a few good guides to ZFS and how to choose hardware for it.

And don't forget the actual FreeNAS user guide. It is very good. https://www.ixsystems.com/documentation/freenas/

If you are looking for a Synology SHR type thing FreeNAS isn't the correct solution.
