Hello,

I'm interested in building an archive server for my home videos and stills. I would like this build to be low power consumption, I don't expect using it more than just a few times a day across 5 computers.

I have now zero'd in on the following specs:

Intel Pentium Processor G4400
Supermicro Micro ATX DDR4 LGA 1151 Motherboards X11SAE-M-O
Crucial 16GB Single 2133MT/s DDR4 PC4-17000 Dual Ranked x8 ECC DIMM CT16G4WFD8213 / MTA18ASF2G72AZ-2G1A1
8x WD Red 2TB NAS Hard Disk Drive

Please let me know if this works. Other suggestions are also welcome.

Thank you very much!

Looks fine, but the $/TB level of the 2 TB drives really wasn't that good last time I looked. You'd probably do better with 6 x 4 TB drives.

A good way of doing it is:
Desired size of zpool / (Drive bays /2 - 2)

So 60TB target with 8 bays in your chassis, means you should buy 4* 30TB drives and put them in a RAIDZ2. Then when you want to expand your storage capacity you only need to buy four more 30TB drives.

No 30TB drives, you say? Well, I'm not going to let facts or practicality get in the way of my advice.

That said, go with larger drives than 2TB. On an archive build you can't really have too much storage.
