Hi all,

I've inherited a rebranded 'space' server with 24 3.5 inch bays and I know that the mboard is a supermicro X8DAH+-F and the RAID card is an Areca ARC-1882LP.

Now I've read, and encountered, the problems with that raid card now passing through the correct information for smartctl so it's unsuitable for ZFS (unless there's some more recent information than I've not seen)

So I was thinking about replacing the raid card (M1015?) but it made me realise that I don't fully understand what expander it uses of whether there's some potential incompatibility problem there? Do you ever update/flash an expander or it it dumb

I've remote at the moment but I've root access to the server so can run any linux commands that will help. I can go and have a physical look but was hoping to save that and I think I'd need to take everything apart to get at it. That said I appreciate from my reading that I probably need to go and check how many 8087 cables are going to the expander.

Forgive me if I've being stupid, all a bit new to me and any help is much appreciated

Information from the Areca webgui, which I'm having trouble interpreting.
The card can take 8 drives but the expander is 2x28(?) and could take 30? So is that 37 in total? Confused

It's likely any normal SAS HBA, (Host Bus Adapter, aka non-RAID), card will work. And the LSI chipsets are highly recommended, (like the IBM M1015 likely uses). As for what type of cable, it's dependant on the SAS Expander's host connection & the replacement SAS HBA card.

SAS Expanders can take firmware upgrades. But in general you don't need to do so. (Unless it's a very new chipset, then it may be wise to read the firmware update notes, to see if anything affects you and your systems. Like for the new 22.5Gbps SAS standard...)

From reading the information you supplied, your current SAS RAID controller is using 4 x 6Gbps SAS connections to the SAS Expander. The SAS Expander seems to have either 28 or 30 SAS connections. So, 4 host connections + 24 drive connections, equals 28. Perfectly reasonable.

Further, it's nice that the Expander supports 6Gbps, as many SATA SSDs can saturate that bandwidth. Even some hard drives are able to sustain higher than 3Gbps can support.

Next, your Areca RAID SAS card is using only half of the SAS ports to the SAS Expander. This is also reasonable, especially if the SAS Expander does not have a second block of host ports. This was designed such that you could have a second SAS Expander, (or possibly dual port your current one, if using SAS disks), adding another 24 disks, (or more).

Sorry Arwen, I completley missed this reply. Huge thanks for looking for me. and that's really helpful. I need to do some further googling to fully understand the other parts.

One quick one though... When you say I need to check the firmware notes for the SAS expander, I'm still a little unsure of the model number e.g. where I'd find that firmware.

or possibly dual port your current one

I'm looking for a second connector on the explander, right?

If your SAS expander is older, don't worry about firmware. My comment was for newer installations.

You can check for a second, 4 port connector on the SAS expander. If you have one, it could be one of these;
  • Dual porting, which is useless for SATA disks, only SAS disks.
  • Pass through to another SAS expander. (Rare to daisy chain SAS expanders, but possible.)
  • Or, simply higher throughput
The last 2 may simply be how you wire the port up. SAS version 2, (the 6Gbps guarentees you have version 2 or higher), allows some odd things. SAS version 2 or higher expander ports are more general purpose. Can be device, (like disk or SSD), or host port, or pass through to another expander.

But, over all, you want to read up on SAS since you have an expander. Anyone else who simply uses a SAS HBA with SATA disks and no expander, is just getting reliable disk ports.
