I didn't know you had to enable the group credential to allow SMB.
When I did this, it still didn't work.
hours later, decided I did nothing wrong and I should restart the SMB service.
Restarting the SMB service fixed the problem.
Not sure if this is because the SMB session caches permissions or TrueNAS doesn't update correctly, but restarting SMB service after enabling SMB group permissions did the trick.
