I know from experience that this question isn’t easy to find and answer to, so maybe we could make a sticky or something about physical hardware upgrades?

That information needs to be more prominent somewhere.
It's not really that spectacular. Anything vaguely usable, including Intel FakeRAID and any reputable HW RAID controller, will take disks in any arbitrary order, handle machine changes, etc.
ZFS just makes it smoother, clearer and more reliable.

Actually, this is NOT really a function of ZFS, though ZFS has a partial solution baked in. This is really device mapping handling at the OS level. The internal cross-checking ZFS does acts as a belt-and-suspenders to the top level OS functionality.

I just find it enjoyable to reminisce about the fun we used to have. One of my biggest storage servers from the late 90's early 2000's or whatever was a 72-drive beast.
