Hi!

I've just bought a second hand HDD (Seagate IronWolf Pro 14tb), should only be used for a month tops.

Right now I've done a conveyance scan, short and extended trough the GUI of TrueNAS, see results below.

I am running a long scan for about 6-7 hours now and the drive does not have any indication ( as far as I can see) that it is second hand.

Am I lucky? They guy acted wierd about it when I asked him if he resetted the SMART values.
So chances this is an HDD straight from factory (they come with blank SMART results if I'm right or something else going on?

Also if the test come back good, is it still wise to run badblocks after this?

Might be formated funky but Power_On_Hours says "6"

smartctl -a /dev/ada1

smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-p2 amd64] (local build)

I have seen mention of a process that could be used on some (older, as it's apparently now secured on more recent models) Seagate drives that a connection with RS.232 to the drive can be used to reset the values.

Very hard to say how you would know if that had been done or not though.

Badblocks after full SMART tests is the recommended burn-in process.
The seller reacting weirdly might be an indication that he somehow wiped the SMART data and did not expect to be caught. But you can't complain about getting a second-hand drive when you bought just that. If the tests show no error, all should be fine.

Thanks for your reaction, I will run badblocks!
I'm not complaining about a second-hand drive. But he says its a month old and if it is 3 years old with 26k hours then I'm complaining ;)

Run the serial number through Seagate's warranty system.

According to suggested drive burn-in comments, after you run badblocks, you should run the SMART Long test again. That will give you a more complete picture of the drive.
