Hello.
I have an N40L server which has four 1.5tb disks and freenas running from a 2.5 incher.

The web gui informs me everything is great, but with the connected display to the server it spurting up messages about failed smart and to back up data immediately.

Which am I to believe?

They are four simple volumes, so if I have to swap one out so be it. but the web gui is stating everything is fine so I am not sure even which disk is supposed to be wrong.

What you're probably seeing is the GUI is reporting that the ZFS system is okay. SMART comes directly from the disks and FreeNAS doesn't currently report SMART as a problem unless you have email configured. I would take this seriously and plan to replace the failing disk. You can issue commands like this from the command line for each drive:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/da0
The disk names can be found in Storage: View Disks Viewing Disks

From the SMART reports, you can see which one is failing and why. The drive's s/n will be listed, so if nothing else, you can record that, shut the system down, find the s/n off the physical drive, REINSERT the drive THEN power on the system.

Then, once you're sure your backups are good and you have a replacement drive ready, follow the instructions here: 6.3.11 Replacing a Failed Drive or ZIL Device

Hi Bollar. I don't have a ZFS system (I don't think) Each disk is a separate volume formatted as UFS.

Ran the commands and indeed on ada3 I have an issue.

I am waiting for a copy to complete which is large so cannot shut down right now, but am concerned that copy is going to the dodgy drive.

So I have four drives from ada0 to ada3

The ada3 has failed, which is disk four. Do the volumes (I have four) correspond to the Disks, i.e. the last volume is called music. Is this the disk that has failed? Its very unclear what volume relates to what disk in Freenas

Ah, so you don't have any redundancy at all?

You're correct that it's hard to figure out which drive has failed from the GUI or CLI. This is why I run the SMART test, note the s/n, shut down the system, and physically confirm the s/n.

I haven't used UFS with FreeNAS, put perhaps if you look at Storage: Volumes: Volume Status, perhaps you can see why physical drive is assigned to which volume.

Yea think I know which one is gone. Its not the one I am copying too.

I have had far to much experience of raids so for my modest needs single volumes is fine. Which once configured with rysnc to another NAS on the network.
