Hey guys

I must say I was very happy about the speed my FreeNAS would deliver until a couple of days ago when I noticed I couldn't get above 1.3mbps. In the process of writing this I found that error, as my Network Cable was broken I believe. FreeNAS was reporting that the cable is 10baseT. Replacing the cable it went up to 1000baseT again. However, there still seems to be something wrong. File Transfers are still not up to their normal speed. Typically I would transfer a movie at speeds between 50 and 80 MB/s. Now it quickly drops back to between 7 and 20 MB/s. These particular numbers are achieved by using AFP and a Macbook Air. Even stranger is the iperf result:

Code:
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 4] 0.0- 1.0 sec 0.06 GBytes 0.54 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 1.0- 2.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 2.0- 3.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 3.0- 4.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.92 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 4.0- 5.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 5.0- 6.0 sec 0.04 GBytes 0.33 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 6.0- 7.0 sec 0.00 GBytes 0.03 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 7.0- 8.0 sec 0.00 GBytes 0.03 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 8.0- 9.0 sec 0.03 GBytes 0.23 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 9.0-10.0 sec 0.09 GBytes 0.79 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 10.0-11.0 sec 0.01 GBytes 0.05 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 11.0-12.0 sec 0.01 GBytes 0.09 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 12.0-13.0 sec 0.00 GBytes 0.02 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 13.0-14.0 sec 0.06 GBytes 0.54 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 14.0-15.0 sec 0.03 GBytes 0.28 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 15.0-16.0 sec 0.01 GBytes 0.10 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 16.0-17.0 sec 0.01 GBytes 0.09 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 17.0-18.0 sec 0.00 GBytes 0.02 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 18.0-19.0 sec 0.08 GBytes 0.67 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 19.0-20.0 sec 0.01 GBytes 0.10 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 0.0-20.1 sec 0.89 GBytes 0.38 Gbits/sec

Maybe someone could assist me in troubleshooting?

I am running FreeNas 8.3.0 (r12701M).

Thanks very very much!

That sure looks like a hardware issue with your network gear. Perhaps try a different cable again?

changed from old Cat5e to Cat6 (just in case) and... no difference...
Another restart of the nas box did do something though. After restart the first 10 iperf sequences were at 0.94 Gbps.
I switched it to 100 sec and then the symptom repeated after the first 5 sequences.

My first one after reboot:
Code:
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 4] 0.0- 1.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 1.0- 2.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 2.0- 3.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 3.0- 4.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.91 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 4.0- 5.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 5.0- 6.0 sec 0.10 GBytes 0.85 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 6.0- 7.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.92 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 7.0- 8.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 8.0- 9.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 9.0-10.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 10.0-11.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 11.0-12.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 12.0-13.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 13.0-14.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 14.0-15.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 15.0-16.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 16.0-17.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 17.0-18.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 18.0-19.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 19.0-20.0 sec 0.11 GBytes 0.94 Gbits/sec
[ 4] 0.0-20.0 sec 2.17 GBytes 0.93 Gbits/sec
Done.

my second one :(

What's your hardware? Especially your NIC? If you aren't using an Intel NIC, you should consider getting one...

doesn't look like its intel... I guess I could try that, but... is there an explanation for a NIC to drop like that after not even half a year?
