setup help for noob

sorry if this has been posted before had a look but couldn't find answer on forums,

trying to set up my first freenas box when it boots up I get the following error messages on the screen as it boots.

'Host name not found'
'failed to start smart d'

Can anybody advise what I have not setup correctly or missed out ?

after a while this appears on the console screen

You need to finish your network configuration. Add your Gateway address and DNS servers.

FreeNAS is trying to connect to an external NTP server and can't get to the Internet.

Thanks for the reply ,

Do you have to use NTP servers ? as i am building this for someone else and i know that he wont like freenas connecting to the outside world for the gateway address and the dns i left blank .

I read some where that freenas uses active directories ? is that why ntp is required ?

FreeNAS can itegrate with Active Directory, but it's not required. I don't use it.

NTP = network time protocol. Since having the correct time on a server is important (think scheduled jobs, etc), it's a nice feature. Does the guy you're building it for, have a NTP server on his LAN. You could point the FreeNAS server that server. Or, you could delete these default entries from the list of NTP servers.

Does the "someone else" also have a SMTP server on his LAN? One that you can use as a mail relay. If not, I'd strongly recommend you add the Gateway and DNS entries so you can setup mail for reporting. Also, setup the SMART tests and alerting.

cheers for that, i am using my setting for dns and gateway to just set it up .
A couple of questions ?

i have created a volume and shared it as Drive -1
and mounted /mht- Drive - 1
enabled Cfis shareing

when i look at across the network the volume is aprox 800 Kb ?

Where have i gone wrong ?

because i am using my settings for testing prurposes when i have done if i reset network setting in the console what will happen ?
when i give it to my mate ? i know he will have to set it up.

sorry if for been vauge i am at work at the moment .

Emailing is virtually a necessity for you to be informed of potential server problems. Emailing requires that the server time be accurate too. Both NTP and SMTP need internet access or the ability to handle those services on the LAN.

But choosing to not use SMTP(and thereby to some extent NTP) is grounds for sad days when FreeNAS realizes disks are having problems and has no way to email you. Plenty of people have lost their data because they had no warning anything was wrong until the lost everything. Then they smacked themselves in the forehead when they realized their configuration was not engineered for long term reliable use.

Seriously reconsider your choice to forcibly disabling the Internet. It won't end well unless you plan to monitor the server by hand daily.

For your new questions, please start a new thread.

In it, provide the FreeNAS version number and hardware information. Also include information on your disk configuration. If you are using this in a VM, provide the virtual settings.

I am building a nas box for someone else , what I wanted to know is as I don't have his dns details , and gateway details I have entered mine for testing purposes . so before I return it back to him I want to remove my settings and say "there you go enter your network settings etc " if I go into the console menu in option 1 and "reset" the lan settings what will happen ?

It would set the interface to dhcp.
