Searching for files in 2021

Searching for files in Spotlight via smb is really slow.

Similarly there doesn't appear to be a locate database on my TrueNAS

freenas% locate iphone7.wav
locate: database too small: /var/db/locate.database
Run /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb

Any tips how to get this working? The TrueNAS search was a bit useless
