Can it be done? I am looking to resell a solid NAS (and not a server) for hosting Geospatial data and need to be able to have PostgreSQL and PostGIS both installed. Can this be done with a FreeNAS? If so any specific models or things to be aware of?

I can confirm PostgreSQL does run inside a jail. Not sure about PostGIS. If it's in the FreeBSD ports repository, then there is a good chance it'll work.

OK. Well then the next logical question is, might it be a simply easier and more cost effective solution to simply build a Linux or BSD server and run PostgreSQL and PostGIS instead of trying to force a round peg into a square hole, aka force PostgreSQL and PostGIS onto a NAS system? Obviously larger footprint unless I was figuring on a rack mouth solution the whole time. Maybe higher power consumption(?)

Thoughts or feedback?
