Hello.

I would want to use FreeNAS on a spare laptop that I have but it's Ehernet port doesn't work anymore. To solve that issue, I would like to buy a USB Ethernet adapter: TP-Link UE300. It has an RTL8153 chipset but I am not sure if it works and I do not want to waste my money (too much). I am using an old laptop because this is what I have and I just want to use FreeNAS for educational purposes.

Thank you in advance for your help !

[moderator note: moved to "Will it FreeNAS", "networking" should be used for actual networking and not far off-road hardware compatibility questions]

It is strongly discouraged to use Realtek NICs in FreeNAS systems. Although it might work, you might get all kinds of weird issues if unlucky.
If you're using it for educational purposes as you're saying I might suggest to use it inside VMware/VirtualBox, that way you don't need to swap out your NIC and it should work as intended.

Hello, thank you for your answers and I am sorry for putting this thread in the wrong category.

After several says of testing, it is finicky. I need to do this command :
Code:
usbconfig -d x.y set_config 1
(you can find x.y by using usbconfig), unplug it and redo the command for it to work.

Anyway, I see that FreeNAS/TrueNAS CORE 12.0 has better support for it, so I can't wait for a more stable version to be released.
