Hi all
This is a list of hardware that I used in my build, that works out of the box with FreeNas 8.3.0. There's no need for special drivers or tinkering.
I have an old ReadyNas NV+, it works OK, but the transfer speeds are really bad. I do all my transcoding on my main PC, then copy to the NAS. I could live with it, wayyy back in the DVD days, but now I only buy blu-rays. A 70 GB transcoded tv-series transfer to the ReadyNas takes almost 1 hour!
So I decided to switch to FreeNas. I guess I could just buy a pre-made system, that would be just as good, but there's no fun in doing that.
This is my build list:
FreeNas 8.3.0
Fractal Design Define R3 White
Intel i3-3225
Intel DH77DF
16 GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600
Enermax MODU82+ II PSU
4gb Delock sata flash module (system)
IBM M1015 (IT mode)
RaidZ2
4 x 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 5400 RPM
4 x 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 7200 RPM
And it just works. I rsync'ed my media collection to FreeNas, setup minidlna and sambashares for my family. Happy days ahead. I'm really looking forward to see ZFS in action. Hardwareraid seems obsolete, when compared to ZFS.
Happy NAS'ing
