Ran out of SATA ports, OK to use LSI Megaraid?

I have four drives in my data pools configured as raid-z1 and two mirrored drives for boot.

I have run out of SATA ports and will likely need to add a couple of drives in the next few months. I have an LSI Megaraid 9270-8i lying around from an old build. I'm wondering if I can use that and add two disks to my existing raid-z1 pool. Can TrueNAS use them effectively in my raid-z1 pool? i.e. I don't want to use the hardware RAID.

Or should I bin that and just get an HBA card?

Toss it and get an HBA. According to this thread at Serve the Home, it's not possible to flash the 9270-8i to IT mode.

What's all the noise about HBAs, and why can't I use a RAID controller?

1) An HBA is a Host Bus Adapter. This is a controller that allows SAS and SATA devices to be attached to, and communicate directly with, a server. RAID controllers typically aggregate several disks into a Virtual Disk abstraction of some sort...
