I don t know if that last one even makes any sort of sense... anyhow was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of benchmarks comparing the different drive configurations and IOps/contigious speed

maybe some real world anecdotes would be helpful too... I am in the market for a new server(upgrading our current one) and we do not have a need for large ammounts of storage just reasonably reliable and quick, our storage needs are going to be in the 6TB area

and if I was to have the hardware in front of me and want to try different configurations what tools would I use to compare the differences?

I would like to share some links with you that might help you out.
This first guy is pretty smart and (not that I am suggesting doing what he does) he gives a pretty interesting introduction to the hardware.
These two videos (taken together) give a really good introduction to 10GB hardware:

10Gb Home Network (P1) - Introduction - https://youtu.be/MgNpI6VAAhI

10Gb Home Network (P2) - Peer to Peer - https://youtu.be/KHiucyRYX_w

This guy does some testing that is interesting and even informative, but some of his conclusions are just wrong because he is a learner, not an expert and he is mistaken about how some things work. Still, there is some useful information here.

10gb Peer to Peer With Your FreeNAS Server - https://youtu.be/8f5cuzcNrLo

FreeNAS Raid Performance Comparison - https://youtu.be/GGd-DiDnLpw

Edit: I guess that the first three links are off topic, but that last one addresses the question.

I'll just point out that you cannot mirror vdevs, so you cannot have a "RAIDZ1 mirror".

Agreed. I wonder if he meant "RAIDZ1 stripe?" (As in multiple RAIDZ1 vdevs striped.)
that is indeed what he meant :p I couldn't remember what it was called so that is why the first sentence of my post said "I don t know if that last one even makes any sort of sense" ;)

but yes I am trying to figure out how to get 500MB-1.25GB/s and what the cost difference between those two file throughput's are.
