Quick n00b question about failing boot SSD

My boot ssd is failing SMART tests and needs to be replaced. I don't have encryption on my ZFS pool but I need to purchase a replacement boot drive, be it an SSD or USB. Am I ok to shut down until I do so, or is it safer to keep the machine running and install the new drive hot?

Also, I'm kind of at the mercy of my local supplier, any reason to avoid Silicon Power USB3.1? It's mostly them or SanDisk...
