Pool Degraded

Logged in to Freenas gui yesterday and there was a pool degraded error. Error stated that the drive had been removed by the administrator. I pulled the drive out and ran the SMART tests in Data Lifeguard and it passed. However when I ran this test the drive exhibited a grating sound during a portion. Of the test. Seagate tools also reported the drive as ok and the same sound emanated from the drive during the test. The drive is a WD Black four TB drive. I ran the extended test and it came back as passed. I'm running the long generic test with Seagate as we speak but it has not finished. Just curious as I have had drive failures in Freenas before but have never saw the removed by administrator message. You think its OK to just place the drive back in and rebuild my mirror? Thanks

Generally speaking, you can perform any tests you need within FreeNAS. SMART tests can, and should be configured to run on your drives automatically. In some cases the system no longer recognizes the drive. Checking cables etc is the first place to look for that issue.

I ran the extended test and it came back as passed.

Tests will report as having "passed" when there may be some indications of error. What is the full output of smartctl -a <disk>. Feel free to scrub the S/N. The full output will help diagnose the issue.

The drive may have had issues communicating with your controller. As above the cables may be bad or loose. Or maybe the controller is going bad. Or perhaps the drive. Given that you hear a strange sound coming from the drive I wouldn't use it.

Thanks! I'm gonna RMA it. I took the other identical drive out today and ran the SMART test and it didn't exhibit that same sound. Thanks for your input!

That seems like a good idea. Again though, you really shouldn't need to pull your drives to run SMART tests. FreeNAS can do it on its own. You should configure your system to run SMART tests automatically.

Hy All, I have a RAID1 configured pool with two WD Purple 1TB drives behind a Delock PCIe RAID card because of my motherboard has only 4 SATA ports. (1-Boot SSD, 2-3 RAID0 two WD Green 2TB HDD).
My problem is that recently the RAID1 pool always get degraded. After rebooting and resilvering the pool the issues is still there.
My build is nearly 6 years old, is it possible that my motherboard is getting die?

Hi @gabeszphoto, feel free to post this in its own thread. It helps to keep things separate and make conversations easier to follow.

Also, in short, do keep in mind that FreeNAS uses zfs which does not have RAID1. It may seem trivial, but using the correct terminology can help keep things clear and may help you and others understand what is going on. Take a look at these two resources, I find them quite helpful.
