Hi,

I was experiencing some issues running plex on a Roku end point. The device wouldn't play some video files and complained about not being able to contact the server. I eventually traced the problem to the 'playback options' - it needed to be set to 'direct with fallback'.

Anyway, that highlighted another issue - i.e. in the plex plugin settings, it stated that it couldn't connect to the server. I configured port forwarding (port 32400) and assigned it to the IP address of my FreeNAS box (.68 on my network). This didn't work and the server remained offline. I then took a look at the nework diagram on my home router and found the plex server was actually using the .1 IP address. I presume this is because it is running as a virtual machine within FreeNAS.

My router wouldn't let me create a rule to forward traffic to the .1 (plex jail) IP address.

I ended up placing the .1 IP in the router's DMZ. This resolved the problem and the server is now connected correctly.

Is this considered to be the correct method for configuring Plex on FreeNAS? Have I missed something important? Is my network security now compromised?

Thanks,

Grimer

**** Resolved ****

I managed to assign the port forwarding to the .1 IP address of the plex jail. I've no idea why it wouldn't work before, but it is working now.
