Errormessage:

freenas manage.py: [middleware.exceptions:38] [MiddlewareError: Please configure a default gateway

So, when I got back from my christmas holiday I noticed I couldn't access my plugins anymore on the server. When I logged in to the admin panel it says that plugins are off and whenever I try to turn them on I just get a message Error: Please configure a default gateway.
I've checked the default configuration and I have the gateway set, even tried changing the jail Ip but I still get the same error!

So... I thought that updating the jail pbi might work but that just gives me another error: Error: Unable to backup plugins?

Anyone with some ideas?

Ok, no one have a clue I guess. I tried deleting the jail and reinstalling it but I still get the same error when I try to enable the plugins.
The settings look alright:

I've even tried to delete the interface and readd it but I still have the same problem!

Are you using ZFS?

First, 2GB? Not good.

For some reason the script to determine the default gateway is failing, because it is being removed somehow (dhcp?) or some other factors like multiple interfaces.

Please paste:

netstat -f inet -rn | grep default|awk '{print $2}'

netstat -f inet -rnW | grep default|awk '{print $7}'

netstat -rn

yup!

Hmm, well I have some spare parts now so I can upgrade the memory later, thought 2Gb should be enough!
For various reasons we have 2 different dhcp servers so that might be the reason.

Will run the commands you wanted as soon as I figure out how to type the |... altgr doesn't seem to be working in the shell :D

It really looks like your install is corrupted or something.

Try a fresh install in a new usb flash drive and run those commands again.

The manual says 6GB of RAM + 1GB for each TB of data. The reason why I asked is that when people start using less than that they have random problems. They have errors that seem unrelated to not enough RAM, corruption they can't explain, kernel panics at random, etc. As William said you are far far below the minimum recommended by the FreeNAS manual section 1.4.2 - RAM. If you read that link it actually says that if you don't have enough RAM you should upgrade or use UFS until you can afford more. I'm not the least bit surprised you are having problems. Some people get away with it for a while, but eventually you have to pay the piper and upgrade. This is a very common mistake for new people to FreeNAS.

I'd try a reinstall of FreeNAS to a new USB and get more RAM. You'll also have to upgrade to the 64 bit version. You should be able to upgrade to 64 bit and keep your configuration.

William is one of the developers of FreeNAS. If he says you need more RAM, you need more RAM :P

I got the same error after installing the plugin jail for the first time. I don't have any shortage of RAM like the original poster. The problem persists for me after removing and reinstalling the jail. Using ZFS, 6 disks in RAIDZ2.

Configure it in Network->Global Conf

Wow, I could have sworn I did. You think I would have double checked after typing that whole post. That's what I get for working at 2AM. Thanks William.

okidoki!

I'll get more ram and reinstall it on a new drive. Just a small question, if I make a backup of the config and upload that to the new install... will all users, folders, shares etc. be the same? we're using it as a backup at work and I don't feel like doing all the permissions over again! :D

Permission are stored in the filesystem/disks, not in freenas config.
tl;dr: if you backup config and upload it back everything will be the same.

Lovely, I moved the drives to a new setup today with more memory and reinstalled (updated) the install to 64-bit instead and everything seemed to be going smooth!

To be able to install the plugins tough I had to remove the Mount Point since it complained it wasn't a PBI if I didn't. So after removing that, updating the jail etc etc and reinstalling transmission I setup the mountpoint again... and now it looks like most of the stuff in my mountpoint is gone. a couple of 100Gb's of files suddenly went *poof* and decided to vanish?

I thought the mountpoints just was virtual paths basically?

[update]
Just noticed that when I go into Volumes it says that the size is 719Gb when it should be 2TB and that I'm using 314Gb...

Hi!

I have a simmilar problem. The machine is an HP microserver with an AMD dual core processor (more info here: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/proliant-servers/product-detail.html?oid=5336619#!tab=features ). The RAM has been upgraded to 10 GB (8+2), there are 4 drives in the system (3x3 TB in ZFS, 250 GB on its own). The FreeNAS is a 64-bit 9.1.1 .

Code:

Your problem is pretty clear, you dont have a default gateway :) as message says.

Configure it in Network->Global Conf

(Apologies for commenting on old post)

I ran into same issue after stopping a jail (stopped it to re-configure the jail's storage after previously configured storage suddenly disappeared -- the storage shows in the settings in WebUI, but doesn't appear nor get mounted in the jail as it should), and after that this "Please configure a default gateway" error started appearing. In "Global Configuration" tab I see the default gateway, as it should be. But from the "Network summary" tab it is missing. My system has 16GB of RAM and only 2TB of storage, so to me it smells like good old bug. After rebooting the system the gateway appears in summary tab as well and the error is gone.
