I'm putting together a backup/file server for a growing small business. It's going to be colocated and most likely be on a gig line (possibly 2xgig for LACP). I think I need some help with general optimizations and some basic questions, but before those here are my specs:

- 3u w/ 16 hotswap drives (SAS)
- i7-3770
- 4x 4TB WD Black WD4001FAEX (Upgrading down the road to a total of 14-16 drives)
- 32gb DDR3 1600
- Intel dual 10/100/1000 NIC
- LSI LSI00244

I'm thinking of going with iSCSI and making each person a user account with a separate home directory with some people getting access to shared folders. They are hoping to use it as part of a larger backup system; this being the main file server with backups of the entire server being sent offsite to long term backup locations.

The only real requirement is that it be fast, as fast as possible with the hardware and setup I have mentioned.

Any suggestions or guidance would be very appreciated!

I'm not sure why you are trying to go with iscsi, but there are serious performance issues with Iscsi on ZFS. You'd be much better off just doing file shares.

I actually have the thread you were in about this very subject bookmarked :D

What would you suggest than specifically. Help would really be appreciated.

I already told you my suggestion, and you even quoted it..

Right you totally did, but specifically what do you suggest if iSCSI is not a good idea. SMB/CIFS/NFS?

Just trying to find the fastest and easiest way for people to send their files to this server.
