Old PC

Hey guys,

i have an old PC with an Asus P5KC mobo http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5KC/ and an Intel Quad core q6600.

By adding ram and some SSD/HDD, do you think it will be able to run a FreeNAS?

Only bad thing is that DDR2 is limited to 8GB and DDR3 to 4GB :(

It might work. But you will have performance and stability issues, probably. Your board only supports max. 4GB. Freenas 9.3 MINIMUM is 8GB. No ECC. Realtek(?) NIC card. You can certainty try to see if it works. But don't trust your data to it.

What about that setup? Intel CPU Pentium G3450 and a http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4664 ? with 16GB RAM

Yes i've seen it, Supermicro X9SCM-F was the cheapest i could find for about 280 Euro, I don't really need a NAS that much to spend that much for just a mobo...i'd better get another gtx 980 ti for my main rig :p

You can always look at a Dell T20 or Lenovo TS140. Both are relatively low-cost servers, support ECC RAM, and I believe have good availability in Europe. Just purchase an additional 8GB stick of ECC RAM.
