Odd CDR problem

When I upgraded my actual FreeNas box my new MB had one less sata port then the old one so I bought a little 2 port Sata 3 card to hook up the CD and leave room to expand one drive. What happens is if I connect the CD to the sata card the system times out (ahcich6 timeout on Slot 0 port 0) However, it I plug in a drive to the sata card and the CD into the MB everything works. Has anyone else run into this before? I just find it odd that the drive works and the CD doesn't in the same port.
