Putting together my build list for freenas server. Initially the server will be in the home office, 4-6 months and will then be moved to real office (currently shopping). Does anyone have any experience with the http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1U/813/SC813MTQ-350C.cfm chassis and it's noise level. My wife and I still have to work in the same office and the bedroom is next door.

Thanks

I have one of those :) It, and several other old machines live in our loft running 24/7 above the master bedroom and we can not hear anythng at night.

It is not silent, but personaly I wouldn't object to working in the same room as it - It is quieter than the other (very old) tower machines I have.

If noise is one concern and you intend to use FreeNAS, do *not* get this chassis.... it is *LOUD*

you may want to read this:
http://forums.freenas.org/threads/control-of-fan-speeds-from-freenas.16486/#post-84867

on a solution to reduce the noise issue.

Or if price is of no concern:
http://www.acoustiproducts.com/en/acoustirack.asp

will set you back around $4k...
then it's allright...

IBM has a chassis for much less (around $1k) that drops the noise level a little bit:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoc...assisop.oek.doc/dw1hg_r_product_overview.html
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/au/x/options/rackandpower/rack.html (that's the last one on the page)
