I'm running version 8.0.4 and am unable to boot FreeNAS - I get the following error several times, before it gives up:
"No space left on device..." from several files in /etc/, so I went digging, expanded the partition size and found that the file /etc/local/periodic/daily/smart is being continuously written to until it fills /etc/. I've sort of hit a wall with this, as I'm unsure what process/service would be responsible for this and how I can further troubleshoot.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

8.0.4 is a bit old. At this point, I'd reinstall FreeNAS on a new (4-8GB) flash drive. If you don't have a copy of the OS, you can download the software from here: http://download.freenas.org/, but 8.2.0 is the oldest available. I still have a copy of 8.0.4 x64 ... and could make it available if you really wanted it.

Do you have a backup of your configuration file? If so, after you reinstall FreeNAS, it would just be a matter of restoring that file and you should be back in business. If not, you'd need to reconfigure all your settings. You might be able to pull it off your existing flash drive. It's in the /data directory (4th partition) and is named freenas-v1.db.

I feel extremely silly right now. I don't know why I just didn't create a new USB stick with the newer version on it (I think because I've had this box running nonstop since 2011 and haven't really had to do anything with it); but I just did that, didn't bother with the settings, imported the old volume and voila, a brand new instance of my NAS without the pain. Thank you so much :)

No need to feel silly! It's a common problem. And, if you save a copy of the configuration file, you won't have to reconfigure it, should your flash drive fail in the future. You can even setup a cron job to copy the configuration file automatically if you wanted to. There are sample scripts on the forum.

Out of curiousity, what version did you upgrade to?

Just member to check is harddrives ok, and their smart stats. When i had last time no space left on device, i had one failing hdd witch smart alerts filled system space full in one minute. Edit: and i had it in 8 version, i dont know how much space alerts have in version 9, but it was funny in 8 that alerts was able to fill system memory partiton to full in one minute time.

@gpsguy; I'm now running 9.3-stable.

@Starpulkka, you might be on to something there, as I've had several drives die on me in this array before. Although recently, I've been getting alerts of filling the volume past 80% capacity - might that fill those logs?

Thanks for everyone's help with this, you guys have been awesome.

maby,
but if you can look message window in gui, there should be what alerts you are currently missing. Ofcourse if you have log disk full you cant see new alerts in log files, thats why is nice to look gui messages window. And im not sure how loggin goes on freenas 9 version. I remember i fixed it in 8 by building log error messages server, where all my freenas alerts goes, and that then alerted me, if some serious alert did occur. In 8 version you did get pretty much everyday information, so a red help alert did easily go unnoticed.
