So I am little confused regarding the danger/risk of turning Sync off for NFS...

I know that when using NFS shares with ESXi that Sync should be turned on and I completely understand that and agree 100% (there is tons of information on here as to why that is important). Where I am confused is with the following use case scenario... Lets say I have a dataset that I am sharing to the network using a CIFS share, that CIFS share is not using Sync (right?) so if I were to share that same dataset using NFS would it be OK to turn Sync off for that dataset?

Hope that makes since, thanks!

I haven't observed samba making sync writes.

No.

I am not doubting you, but for my own personal knowledge would you mind explaining why turning Sync Off would not be a good idea?

FYI: I really dont have an issue with Sync... I already have an SSD drive ready to go to use for a ZIL drive I am just trying to better understand what is going on here.

Thanks!
