If anyone could spend a few minutes reviewing my choices for my first freenas build:

Mobo Asrock C2550D4I

Case fractal design 804

Memory 2x Crucial CT102472BD160B.18FED

PSU Corsar 450 RM modular PSU

USB 8gb for boot, 1SSD for mysql

Storage 6x2TB Green WD - already owned

Cache (l2arc?) 1x SSD 120 OWC - already owned

ZIL 1x SSD Toshiba THNSNJ128GCSU - already owned

Is this build ok? Would use for a few vms + backup + transmission.

What would you change?

Thanks in advance:)

You really didn't need a ZIL or a L2ARC with a system this size. I'd consider getting one more USB drive and do a mirror boot device and maybe bump them up to 16GB if you don't what to prune old boot environments much.

so, 2x16 usb drives to boot? like raid1?

i never used freebsd/freenas but on linux i don´t think you can do that via sw, i need a hw raid for the boot device. (i think)

doesnt zil/l2arc help for the iops for the vmware?

If you have both of the USB drives installed at the time you install FreeNAS it will ask you about mirroring them then. If not, you can add it through the GUI later. FreeNAS uses ZFS to software mirror the two USB drives. So, you get all the benefits of ZFS on the boot drives. Scrubs, error detection, etc.
